This year we all gathered in Copenhagen for EiG, a first time venue for Clarion, and according to the vibes we will be back there next year.
I have to say it wouldn't be my first choice as a conference venue. Some delegates from Eastern Europe and the Far East had to endure two flights and because of connections this caused two more overnight stays.
For GBGC the conference was a success – we met with old and new clients and it was well worth attending.
PartyGaming' Jim Ryan remarked on the changing pattern that had shaped these conferences over the years. At first we saw the software geeks, pony tails and earrings, T-shirts and jeans. Then the conference became more corporate as private equity took an interest in the business and companies began to list on the Stock Exchange. UIGEA in 2006 saw the move from Montreal to Europe. Lawyers and government became delegates followed by State Lotteries. And in 2009? Payment processors and recruitment companies were to the fore.
With consolidation expected in the Internet gambling industry we anticipate that there will be fewer conferences in the future. We have already seen the World Poker Congress merged into EIG and The Betting Shop Show is now within IGE at Earls Court. This is no bad thing because it will save the industry money and enable executives to do the business in one or two days rather than spend time at too many conferences with a dwindling supply of delegates.
Organisers need to work with the industry. We are approaching a period where expenses are under greater scrutiny.
According to Virgin Money, Stockholm, London and Paris are the cheapest places in Europe for a two day break.

We asked a taxi driver what the main tourist attractions were in Copenhagen. He said we have the Little Mermaid, the Tivoli Gardens and err…. much head scratching well….. I can't really think of a third.
