Meydan opens with spectacular fanfare
The new Meydan racecourse in Dubai held a spectacular official opening night in March with the first running of the Dubai World Cup at the new track.
GBGC was in attendance for the event and the feature race was won in a three-way photo by Gloria de Campeao in front of a capacity crowd of 60,000 people. The total purse for the race was a staggering US$10 million.
Saeed Humaid Al Tayer, CEO of Meydan, explained in a press release, “the launch of Meydan makes a monumental mark in history. To accomplish building the world’ largest integrated racing facility is no mean feat and we are very proud to have been able to do so in a timeframe that would have typically taken twice as long for others, if not more. Meydan is the representation of the rich history, culture and tradition of our people, born out of the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai.”
