At the start of 2016 GBGC reported on the new Drone Racing League (DRL) that was holding the first race of its inaugural season at the Sun Life Stadium in Miami. GBGC highlighted the potential attractiveness of the sport as a betting medium, describing it as “betting for the Star Wars generation”.

Now satellite broadcaster Sky has invested US$ 1 million in the DRL and will show drone racing events on a new channel to be called Sky Sports Mix. Sky Sports and DRL will also help organise an official DRL race at an iconic venue in London, billed as the first professional drone race in the UK.

Emma Lloyd, Group Business Development Director at Sky, said: “We’re thrilled to be partnering with DRL to help develop this exciting new sport. The investments we make are all about driving innovation, and ultimately improving the Sky experience for customers.”

We’re really looking forward to working with the team at DRL to grow the sport and to bring something completely different to audiences across both TV and digital.”

Television coverage is an important factor in developing betting interest on a sport, so this announcement is a significant one.
