Isle of Man gambling consultant Lorien Pilling is celebrating success in the Confucius Institute’s official examination of Mandarin Chinese proficiency.
Over the summer he travelled to the London Confucius Institute at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) to take levels two and three of the HSK exam. The exams test a candidate’s listening, reading and writing ability in Mandarin Chinese and Lorien scored 100% in four of the five sections.
Lorien, who is a consultant at Global Betting and Gaming Consultants (GBGC) in Castletown, said:
“I am very pleased with the results and to have put my Chinese to the test. Jenny Zhou, chairman of The Isle of Man Chinese Association, helped me find a teacher and I have been taking lessons for a couple of years”.
“I learn Chinese for my own enjoyment and development but it has also been useful in developing relationships with GBGC’s customers in China and the Philippines, as well as on business trips to Macau”.
