Betting on lotteries has become increasingly popular with gamblers in various jurisdictions, and none more so than in South Africa. Results from South African operator Phumelela show that turnover on numbers betting surpassed R 1,000 million in 2017, an increase of 19%.
Numbers now accounts for the majority of Phumelela’s fixed-odds betting turnover at 53%, with horses 31% and sports 16%.
The offering of betting on lotteries has not been without controversy in some markets because of the perceived loss of income to the state lotteries. In the UK, for example, the DCMS has announced a ban on betting on the Euromillions draw.
