The amount of Machine Games Duty (MGD) collected in 2020 tumbled, as the restrictions on B2 stakes and COVID-19 lockdowns took their toll.

MGD fell by 37% to GB£ 358 million in 2020. At its peak in 2018, MGD contributed GB£ 718 million to HM Treasury. There will be some recovery in this rate with the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions, but it will be constrained by the fact that 100s of betting shops have closed permanently in the last 18 months.
